Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions regarding public sector contract categories and topics.
How do I search for public sector procurement topics?
You can browse procurement topics on this page by business sector or by searching the topics table directly. Each topic page is a pre-built search that groups live tenders, awards, and pre-tender notices around a specific category or industry, so if you're looking for AI tenders, NHS tenders, or construction tenders, you'll find a dedicated page with all the relevant opportunities in one place.
You can also use the search bar at the top of the page to type a keyword and jump straight to matching results.
What is a CPV code and how can I use it to find tenders?
CPV stands for Common Procurement Vocabulary. It's a standardised classification system used across UK and EU public procurement to categorise what's being bought. Every tender notice is tagged with one or more CPV codes, which means they're one of the most reliable ways to find opportunities relevant to your business.
Rather than relying solely on keyword searches, CPV codes let you surface tenders based on what's actually being procured. For a full breakdown, see our guide: What is a CPV code?
What's the difference between searching by keyword and searching by CPV code?
Keyword searches look for specific words in notice titles and descriptions, which is flexible but can miss opportunities that use different terminology. For example, a search for "cybersecurity" won't return notices that say "information assurance" or "network security."
CPV codes, on the other hand, are a standardised classification assigned to every notice at source, so they capture the full breadth of opportunities in a given category regardless of how individual buyers describe them.
The most effective approach goes beyond both. Stotles uses AI-driven semantic search that analyses your competitors, partners, website, and past wins to build a personalised relevance score for every opportunity. If you don't have access to that, combining CPV-based topic pages with keyword filters is the next best way to ensure broad coverage while keeping results targeted.
How are procurement topics organised?
Topics are grouped into 14 broad business sectors: AI, Cleaning & FM, Construction, Defence & Security, Education, Energy & Sustainability, Food & Catering, Governance & Reform, Healthcare, Housing, IT & Technology, Professional Services, Transport, and Workforce & Skills.
Within each sector, you'll find more specific topic pages that drill into narrower areas of procurement activity. This structure is designed to match how suppliers typically think about their market. Start with your industry, then explore the specific niches where you compete.
How many procurement topics are there?
There are currently over 60 procurement topics spread across 14 business sectors, and we regularly add new ones based on market activity and supplier demand. Topics range from broad categories like Cloud and Cyber through to specific areas such as G-Cloud, Digital Outcomes, and even major programmes like HS2 and Hinkley Point C.
Can I set up alerts for a specific topic?
Yes. Once you've found a topic relevant to your business, you can save it and configure alerts so you're notified when new tenders, awards, or pre-tender notices are published in that area. This means you won't need to manually check back, because opportunities come to you.
How often are new tenders added to each topic?
New notices are added continuously as they're published across UK procurement portals, including Find a Tender, Contracts Finder, and devolved platforms like Public Contracts Scotland and Sell2Wales. Most topic pages are updated daily, though the exact frequency depends on the volume of procurement activity in that area. High-volume sectors like IT and healthcare see new notices almost every day, while more niche topics may update less frequently. You can see the last update timestamp on each topic card.
Can I search for topics by region?
Topic pages surface opportunities from across the UK, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Each individual notice includes buyer location data so you can filter by geography once you're inside a topic. If you're targeting specific regional procurement systems, our glossary covers the main portals: PCS Tender (Scotland), Sell 2 Wales, and Tenders Northern Ireland.
I don't know my CPV code. How do I find the right topic for my business?
Start with the business sector that best describes your industry. For example, if you sell software, look under IT & Technology; if you provide cleaning services, try Cleaning & FM. From there, browse the topic pages within that sector to see which ones match the type of work you deliver. You don't need to know your CPV code to find relevant opportunities.
Alternatively, you can use the search bar on this page to type what you sell in plain language and see which topics come up.
