Tender description

Portsmouth City Council (“the Authority”) has awarded a contract for the construction and refurbishment works at the D-Day Museum located on Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, Hampshire PO5 3NT. The main headings under which the construction / refurbishment works are required are: — structural alterations, — forming extension (including substructure, external walling, roofing and drainage works), — internal partitions, — mechanical and electrical installations, — fittings and furnishes, — floors, walls / ceiling finishes, — general repairs / improvements to the building fabric. The Authority awarded the contract on the 2.5.2017 with a subsequent commencement date on site of 29.5.2017 with a planned completion date of 10.11.2017. Portsmouth City Council (“the Authority”) has awarded a contract for construction and refurbishment works at the D-Day Museum located on Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, Hampshire PO5 3NT. The D-Day Museum was established in its current building in 1984. The building incorporates an earlier vehicular shed which was located on the site as part of an historic MOD site. The building was then extended in 1994 to house a café. The Museum sits within a Grade 2 Registered Historic Park and Gardens adjacent to Southsea Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The current Museum is dated and no longer meets the requirements of the expectations of modern day visitors which has resulted in the decline of visitor numbers in recent years. In addition to the above, the Mechanical and Electrical Installations are inefficient and provide limited environmental controls. In order to reverse the Museum’s decline and bring back the D-Day story to life in a meaningful, relevant and accessible way for present and future generations the Council are embarking on a major redevelopment project with funding provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund which involves the following capital works: — interior reconfiguration including removal of some walls / ceilings with associated structural strengthening, — external façade and visitors entrance refurbishment, — ticketing / information / retail space reconfiguration, — existing gallery spaces reconfiguration, — new build extension to form corridor between existing exhibition spaces across an external area to bring this within the building’s footprint, — café relocation, — replacement / upgrading of the Mechanical and Electrical Services throughout the building, — provision of appropriate back of house space, — creation of a flexible Learning / Event space. In addition to the above, there will be a separate Exhibition Fit-out contract which will commence following the completion of the construction / refurbishment works. The main headings under which the construction / refurbishment works will be required are: — structural alterations, — forming extension (including substructure, external walling, roofing and drainage works), — internal partitions, — mechanical and electrical installations, — fittings and furnishes, — floors, walls / ceiling finishes, — general repairs / improvements to the building fabric. The appointed contractor will undertake the construction and refurbishment works acting as the Principal Contractor as defined by the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
