Tender description

Swansea UNI/Active Building awarded GES to carry out tender works on a R & D project encompassing a commercial rooftop solar PV scheme, a carport solar PV scheme, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and EV car chargers located at the Swansea University Bay Campus. The objective of the proposed scheme is to enhance the sustainability of the buildings reducing the building dependence on expensive and less carbon efficient fossil fuel derived energy imported from the national grid and determine the best control schema between each of the elements to optimise the PV generated green energy best. A bespoke control system (Schneider Microgrid Controller) will control the distribution of PV generated power between the BESS, School Of Management (SOM) Building and EV chargers. The Y Twyni building is located centrally on the Bay Campus, Swansea and is adjacent to the School of Management (SOM). The Y Twyni will be the platform to locate the rooftop PV system, however, the PV generated energy will not supply the Y Twyni directly, a Distribution Board panel at the Y Twyni building will connect and route PV power to the SOM building via the BESS system. The BESS system will be connected to the SOM and EV chargers, the control of the power from the BESS will be via the schneider control system (location in comms room in the School of Management Building). A zero MEC G99 grid connection will be required as a regulatory requirement for behind the meter generation. The zero MEC will be associated with the SOM MPRN (LV connection). The Contractor shall install a G99 Protection Relay and a G100 Export Limiting Device (ELD) in Control Panels at an appropriate location. Charge and discharge cycles of the BESS will be determined from the EV demand and also the capacity of the BESS. The following is the control order for the PV generated power from the Y Twyni PV roof, the carport PV and the BESS system. Battery Energy Storage System Order of Distribution (where does power go priority) 1. EV Chargers 2. SOM The control of above will be by the Schneider Microgrid Controller. The proposed Single Line Diagram is included in Appendix G. The project is planning exempt for the commercial rooftop solar scheme.
