Reductions in regular preventative maintenance at Carisbrooke Castle have resulted in the spread of woody growth and vegetation across large areas of the inner bailey. Wall-head cappings are failing, allowing water to penetrate the masonry structure. A succession of harsh winters has accelerated the freeze-thaw effect and resulted in masonry failures and opening of joints, leaving further areas of masonry unstable. Proposed works: • Removal of valerian and other woody growth throughout the inner bailey and gatehouse. • Consolidation of the eastern internal face of the Inner Bailey, including the Armoury and parts of Carey’s Mansion. • Consolidation of the Queen Elizabeth entrance gate.
