Tender description
This is a call for competition by Iarnród Éireann – Irish Rail (“IÉ”) seeking suitably qualified candidates to participate in the tender competition for the design and build of the Battery Electric Multiple Unit (BEMU) Charging Infrastructure System Project (the “BEMU Project”). The Project will provide battery train charging infrastructure at Wicklow Station, County Wicklow in Ireland (“BEMU Charging Infrastructure System Project”)(Reference: 9548). The BEMU Charging Infrastructure System Project forms a part of the Wicklow Rail Capacity Enhancement Project (the “WCE Project”) which is a strategic initiative led by IÉ to improve rail connectivity between Dublin City Centre and Wicklow Town. It supports sustainable travel, addresses increasing passenger demand, and aligns with national decarbonisation goals. The project is part of the National Transport Authority’s Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy 2022–2042, specifically under Measure RAIL3 – DART Extension. The preferred operational model to deliver on the WCE objectives involves deploying BEMUs to provide one train per hour per direction between Dublin and Wicklow. IÉ has already made the first order of BEMU trains which are expected to enter into service during [2026]. For BEMUs to operate successfully, charging facilities are required to recharge the batteries. Following development of new facilities at Drogheda Station, IÉ has identified the Southern Line as the next phase for the expansion of the BEMU deployment, with Wicklow Station as the preferred charging station location. The BEMU trains will utilise the existing overhead line equipment north of Greystones and run-on battery power between Greystones and Wicklow, where they will be charged.
