Tender description

The Forth Road Bridge (FRB) is a long span suspension bridge which carries the A9000 over the Firth of Forth. It was opened in 1964 and is a Category A listed structure. The bridge consists of two approach viaducts and a suspension bridge which forms the main section of the structure. The shipping lane runs under the Forth Road Bridge (FRB) and navigation lights are placed on the bottom chord to assist marine traffic passing under FRB through the deepest section of the shipping channel. Six independent steel staircases were added to FRB to both east and west longitudinal stiffening trusses, allowing maintenance access to the lights. Each staircase requires refurbishment due to deterioration to existing steelwork and protective coatings. Full refurbishment of the staircases will require the installation of dropped object netting and full height temporary works platform to the bottom chord, specially designed (& independently checked) to allow the careful removal of the steelwork. The staircases comprise of channels and RSA’s forming the landings, flat plate stringers and RSA hangers at the main supports. All handrailing will be replaced with new 48.3mm dia tube handrailing with special geometry to avoid clashing with staging angles as per original design. The works shall consist of design & installation of temporary works, fabrication surveys, removal of existing staircases from FRB footways, offsite refurbishment & repair including blasting and galvanising, replacement of steel components & localised strengthening, insitu welding of replacement balustrade gates and painting. The Contractor must have demonstrable experience of similar works. The Contractor must also be approved to the applicable sector schemes for these kinds of works with steelwork to be EXC 3 certified.
