Visual observation of benthic ecosystems is a key part of Defra's marine ecosystem monitoring. Large quantities of still imagery and video are collected using a variety of platforms including towed camera sledge, bed-hop cameras, drift cameras, moored cameras, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and more recently autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV).
