Infrastructure and Environment – Solid Waste operate the hazardous waste storage cells at La Collette. Leachate is generated as rainwater filters through the waste in the cells. Leachate collects in the cells and requires removal. An external contractor is currently appointed to remove leachate from the cells by vacuum tanker and transport it for treatment and disposal at the Sewage Treatment Works. The La Collette Headland – Leachate Management project aims to automate the monitoring and removal through the installation of a remote monitoring and automated pumping system. The project involves a number of elements of works of distinctly different engineering disciplines and requiring different skills to construct and implement. The Drainage & Services Extension Contract is for the works of civil engineering construction and includes: - extension of the existing foul sewers at La Collette Reclamation Site Phase II to enable automated pumps to discharge directly into the foul sewer network, and - extension of the existing below ground service duct network to enable installation of power and control cables for the pumps. The contract is not for the installation of automated pumps and associated electrical and control works.
