N72-N73 Mallow Relief Road Preferred Option Site Investigation

Cork County Council in association with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) (the Employer) is working to develop a road scheme to bypass Mallow Town. The proposed scheme comprises 3.75km mainline road (5.1km including side roads and link roads) with associated structures to cross existing roads, rivers and streams. The proposed alignment commences at the existing N20 adjacent to Mallow General Hospital in Ashgrove, and extends east through Ironmines, Spa Glen and Ballyviniter Lower before terminating in the area of Oliver’s Cross via a proposed roundabout. An offline active travel facility is also proposed to support sustainable travel within Mallow. The offline active travel corridor (approx. 2.1km) will tie in at Ballyvinter Lower with the pedestrian and cycle facilities that are proposed along the Mallow Relief Road, and will follow the line of the old Mallow to Fermoy railway line into Mallow Train Station. There is limited existing information on the ground conditions underlying the proposed route. Additional ground investigation is therefore required to supplement the existing information. The necessary land is to be acquired by CPO. Site investigation works will occur with landowners’ permission. Access to this land is predominantly available from public roads and farm entrances. The topography of the area is relatively undulating. Much of the land has been previously used for agriculture, with a number of residential properties. Existing roads include the N20, N72, N73, L1207, Ballyviniter Lower Side Road and various access tracks.
