A Social Welfare Summer School has taken place annually since 2000, and is usually held at Queen’s University, Belfast and in recent years, at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth on alternate years. The Department for Social Development (DSD) in Northern Ireland and the Department of Social Protection (DSP) in the Republic of Ireland have jointly run the event, with each taking the lead within their jurisdiction. The Summer School is modelled on a similar successful Department of Work and Pensions development event, which has been held in King’s College, Cambridge, England, for approximately fifty years. Formal evaluation of previous Summer Schools indicates that the event has been highly successful. Consequently, the Department for Social Development and the Department of Social Protection (hereinafter referred to as the Departments) wish to continue with this development opportunity and intend to continue to rotate it between academic institutions in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Departments wish to appoint the position of an Academic Director for the Social Welfare Summer School. The responsibilities of the Academic Director will include the academic content and design of the Summer School.
