Tender description
Derry City and Strabane District Council seeks to and Carbon and Energy Assessment Consultancy Team for the Acorn Farm project. The Acorn Farm project will transform a former Ministry of Defence derelict site into a growing space as a centre of Permaculture excellence in the Northwest City Region. The Acorn Farm Project will facilitate the development of new food growing technologies and deliver a capital project which is an exemplar as a climate smart net zero/nearly zero carbon project, incorporating the use of circular economy principles, sustainable energy and energy/resource efficient technologies. It is proposed, that when finished the facility will operate as a council owned, community hub. Acorn Farm will provide an educational resource and include teaching, demonstration and learning spaces that will provide opportunities for skills and training in ‘green technologies’. It will showcase exemplar Principles and Practices of permaculture excellence. It will attract visitors offering a green tourism proposition and experience. The facility will comprise a 20m diameter geodesic dome, which will provide a reception area, office space, growing and demonstration spaces, together with a basement vertical growing space. Adjoining the dome is a multi-purpose space for a variety of uses including teaching and demonstrations and community activities. There will also be glasshouses, small geodesic domes, raised planting areas and storage sheds, hard and soft landscaping and parking on the site. Council seeks to ensure that Acorn Farm is developed to be Climate Smart by minimising climate risk and emissions. A CGI image of Acorn Farm is enclosed in Appendix A. The project secured full planning permission in September 2022 and has recently secured Building Control approval for the geodesic dome. A copy of the Dome plans are attached in Appendix B. Please refer to the CfT documents for further detail.
