Conservation Works to Abbeyshrule Tower, Abbeyshrule, Co Longford - Phase 2, 2022

Tender description

Longford County Council wishes to appoint suitably-qualified contractors to undertake conservation repair works to the tower house at the ruins of Abbeyshrule Cistercian Abbey, Abbeyshrule, Co. Longford. These works represent the second phase of repairs to this national monument. The works will comprise the close inspection, continued assessment and recording of the fabric to the lower levels of the tower by all design team members, to ensure an appropriate conservation strategy for works including: • Repairs to the vaulted chamber at ground floor including pinning & pointing with a hot lime mortar. • Reinstatement of lost facing stone on north elevation to improve stability. • Grouting floor areas of the privy chambers using a hot lime mix (or suitable agreed alternative). • Grouting the whole first floor area using a hot lime mix (or suitable agreed alternative). • Careful removal of a modern shuttered concrete buttress • Consolidation of stone around a low-level breach in the south elevation. It is the intention to commence works, including investigation works, in late 2022, to be completed in 2023, subject to grant funding being made available.
