<p>Nowcasting is crucial to providing warnings of severe weather at very short lead times. As part of the Met Office&rsquo;s development of its nowcasting capability, a thunderstorm forecasting system has been developed which uses weather radar products as its primary input. The Met Office would like to iterate on the prototype that has been developed to improve specific aspects of the system. The system predicts the trajectory of thunderstorms based on the previous observations of the storm&rsquo;s location, as identified in weather radar data. In evaluations to date, these storm tracks can show unrealistic paths and the trajectories have been found to be highly variable from forecast to forecast, though largely unbiased. The work must focus on reducing the variability of forecasts of cell trajectory.</p> <p>The aim of this project is to improve positional accuracy and reduce the variability of thunderstorm trajectory forecasts from the Met Office&rsquo;s Radar Cell Tracking system.</p> Keywords: Research, Weather Forecasting Development
