This Competition is divided into 3 Lots. Suppliers may tender for individual or multiple lots. The iLife consortium has a vision, in which Irish optical frequency comb laser technology is deployed to tackle some of the world’s most advanced data transmission, sensing, and measurement challenges, impacting millions of lives every day. This DTIF project will address a problem known as “the capacity crunch”, which refers to the fact that the major optical fibre networks that carry 99% of the world’s internet traffic today, are running out of bandwidth. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), the communication technology that enabled the Internet, is running out of steam and new innovations are required to enable it to continue to grow. Optical frequency comb technology allows network operators to pack more data into their existing optical fiber networks with reduced cost, footprint and power consumption, thus overcome the capacity crunch.
