Alternative providers are to provide Luton borough council with education settings that meet the needs of learners who are permanently excluded or not school ready or are signed off from school on medical grounds. Luton Council intends to set up an approved list of suitable qualified providers The Council will use alternative provision to meet its responsibilities to arrange education for pupils who, because of exclusion, illness or other reasons, would not otherwise receive a suitable education. Alternative provision may also be commissioned directly by schools for pupils directed off-site to improve their behaviour or to access external support. Where schools commission places directly, they are required to undertake regular reviews of the placement to provide assurance that the off-site provision is achieving its objectives and that the pupil is benefitting from it.
