Prime Time for Older Adults

Our ‘Prime Time for Older Adults’ pilot project aims to build on (from a clinical exercise physiology perspective) the existing skillset of fitness professionals in Laois so that they have the skills and knowledge to (i) implement and evaluate an evidence-based strength and conditioning intervention for older adults and (ii) teach older adults the skills and knowledge they need to empower them to increase their functional strength and fitness for activities of daily living and manage and improve clinical conditions they may have including arthritis, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The overall goal of this project is to create more opportunities for older adults in Laois to be physically active under the supervision of skilled professionals that are equipped to deliver group physical activity sessions for this population, particularly in relation to the clinical conditions that often exist in this group. 1. Custom design the clinical exercise physiology instructor trainer manual associated with this course. (please note this is the pilot programme material and may be amended slightly post pilot if the programme is to be adopted) 2. Custom design participant take-home resources. 3. Obtain ethical approval to run the intervention as a research study. 4. Put Laois fitness instructors through their ‘Train the Trainer’ pre programme training course and assess competence in same. 5. Recruit and screen 100 participants for the 12-week intervention. Obtain informed consent. 6. Deliver the 12-week intervention including pre and post testing. 7. Write and submit research paper for publication. 8.Complete all reports, evaluations paperwork etc. for Laois Sports Partnership & Sláintecare.
