Research for the National Food Strategy

The Authority is the UK Government Department responsible for the environment, food and farming and rural affairs. The Authority's priorities are to secure a healthy natural environment; a sustainable, low-carbon economy; a thriving farming sector and a sustainable, healthy and secure food supply. In 2018, Defra's Secretary of State announced he had asked his non-executive Director, Henry Dimbleby to write a cross-government national food strategy. There is widespread consensus amongst civil society, producers and the food industry that a cross government food strategy is needed. Different constituencies have different purposes in mind for such a strategy but they have a common view on the need for greater policy coherence across departments. While there is probably a greater mix of perspectives on the outcomes which a new food strategy should aim to achieve, agreement on these outcomes is a pre-requisite for building support for the new strategy. These outcomes form the central proposition of the vision which the new strategy will aim to deliver. Developing and building support for these outcomes, and proposing a plan for their monitoring, and possibly also the development of associated targets is the first work stream being initiated in support of the development of the new strategy.
