Borough of Poole requires a contractor to supply an effective deterrent for the bird population that would otherwise be attracted to the waste in the transfer station. Principle requirements Borough of Poole is seeking an appropriately qualified and experienced contractor to: • Implement an effective solution(s) to prevent the bird population from nesting on the site. • Carry out effective control(s) which prevents the bird population from perching or scavenging waste from the site. Background This site operates partly as a Household Waste Recycling Centre. Residents’ deposit various waste streams in open 35 yard skips or closed bring banks. The other part of the site contains a waste transfer station which is a large, enclosed building with shutter doors and contains refuse, recycling and garden waste. Appendix A shows a map of the site layout. The building is partly covered by solar panelling. There is no ladder or step access to the top so specialist equipment is required for any personnel working on this height. The Borough of Poole is looking for a contractor that has worked on similar waste sites and can provide solutions that will keep the urban gull population from perching and feeding or scavenging during the operational hours of the site. Nesting should also be prevented. The Council has previously used hawking and gun shot to deter the bird population. There is no preferred solution. The Council is open to innovative practices but only if they have proven success at other waste sites. Keywords: control, waste, pest, gulls
