Like many UK authorities, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is progressing a SMART CITY agenda. For Southend the concept of SMART includes the integration of information and communications technology (ICT), and various physical devices connected to the network (the Internet of things or IoT) to monitor what is happening in the borough, to optimize the efficiency of city operations and services, to connect to citizens and employ predict and prevent strategies.
