Tender description

Flightpath Residents Association (FRA) looks after the interests of the people of the Roundshaw Estate in the London Borough of Sutton. Many residents are aware that the Estate rests on part of the original site of what was Croydon Airport and a Military Airfield. The Airport played a major role in the development of commercial air travel prior to WWII, its importance being highlighted currently in the Washington Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Croydon Airport was also the location where Neville Chamberlain declared we have ‘Peace in our time’ prior to the outbreak of conflict. Its commercial life was interrupted in the War Years when Croydon became a Military Airfield and Spitfire Squadron 92 was permanently based there. With the assistance of other Spitfire Squadrons temporarily posted to Croydon, Squadron 92 carried out thousands of sorties during the Battle of Britain with their resultant dog-fights. Out of all the young pilots deployed to Croydon, only one survived to the cessation of hostilities. The FRA and the Beddington & Wallington Local Committee are very aware of this history and wish to commemorate the amazing feats and sacrifices of those many brave souls by commissioning a Memorial inspired by the Spitfire. This is to be displayed in the centre of the Roundshaw Estate in an area of Spitfire Road known as the square-a-bout. The Royal Air Force is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2018 and we believe it appropriate to honour the Squadron during this auspicious time if the design and manufacture time-scale allows. This project will be completed in three separate phases. This is the first stage where London Borough of Sutton is seeking to obtain a design idea for a fitting memorial. All ideas should be submitted as scale drawings or photographs and must include the type of material that can be used for the memorial. All design ideas will be evaluated by a panel. London Borough of Sutton will pay a price in the range of £0-£150 for the winning design chosen. Once the designer has been paid, the design will then be fully owned by London Borough of Sutton to be used for further stages and the designer will waive any further rights/claims to that design Keywords: DESIGN, SCULPTURE, ARTIST, SPITFIRE
