TfL RFID tags and readers for accurate location tracking of rolling stock

Transport for London are exploring potential options for installing new RFID tags, either active or passive, within the track environment in order to provide accurate location to existing track geometry measurement systems fitted to passenger and non-passenger rolling stocks. The existing system uses 2.45GHz battery powered active RFID tags with a Tag Talks First protocol. The batteries within the tags have reached or are approaching their 10 year design life. New RFID systems, using similar tags at the same 2.45GHz frequency, are also being installed by other projects to support the introduction of a new signalling system, creating potential interference issues. TfL are thus seeking to gauge market interest and capability for supplying RFID tags and associated readers for the above purposes with a view towards hosting supplier engagement days in late May or early June. Any possible future procurement of any services, supplies or works by TfL would be carried out strictly in accordance with any relevant obligations under the Utilities Contracts Regulations 2016.
