Research on Petroleum Road Fuel Tankers - Work Package 3

Tender description

The Department for Transport Dangerous Goods Division requires a contract for the provision of research activities to ensure that the international regulations and standards on petroleum road fuel tankers are designed to help minimise the risk of harm to people, property and the environment, and are proportionate and implemented in a way which helps to facilitate trade and economic growth. This work package focuses on technical support for three specific activities concerning the welding of aluminium tankers: A gap analysis on non-destructive testing and weld acceptance criteria between firstly the requirements in the current standard EN 13094 referenced in regulations and a proposal for the next revision of EN 12972. Secondly between the current and previous versions of the EN standard and the prevailing US standard(s), in particular ASME Section VIII 1 Division 1 and; Analysis of any other proposals which may compromise the standard of welding on road fuel tankers; and developing improved guidance on competent person welded repairs or modifications, based on recommendations from previous research work, including on aluminium tankers, the effect of contamination from long term exposure to petroleum.
