Provision of Driver Training Programme for 280 staff

The EPA is seeking to appoint a Training Provider who will assist the EPA in promoting a safe driving culture across the EPA and who will provide Driver Training to staff. According to the HSA (Health and Safety Authority), over 14,000 of the road collisions in Ireland between 2008 and 2011 may have been work related. They define ‘driving for work’ to include any person who drives on a road as part of their work either in: • A vehicle provided by their employer; or • Their own vehicle and receives an allowance or payment from their employer for distances driven. While employers cannot directly control roadway conditions, they can promote and influence safe driving behaviour and actions by their employees. To this end, and in consultation with internal health and safety teams, the Learning & Development unit of the EPA will provide a training programme for staff. We envisage approximately 280 staff will undertake driver training over the course of this programme, to be delivered in two phases. The training should comprise the following two core elements: 1. A classroom session This session should highlight common challenges in driving and may include elements such as driving errors, driving in adverse road and weather conditions, vehicle information technology. 2. On–Road one to one training element These one-hour sessions are 1:1 with a trained driving instructor and course participant, to take place in the participant’s normal work vehicle (which may be an EPA vehicle or the participant’s private vehicle).
