Upgrading the self recording video units in the clinical skills labs for the Nursing and Midwifery Dept of the University of Limerick

Currently the Nursing and Midwifery department at the University of Limerick has a self-recording suite of hardware and software installed throughout the Clinical Skills Laboratories. The hardware and software was installed between 2007 and 2008 within the department. Each lab has four Panasonic cameras located in the room – WV-CS570 Series - ceiling mounted at the end of each bed. Full details of the specific make and model of camera are located at the end of this document. Each camera has a corresponding microphone and Windows XP machine linked to it. The camera and microphone feed are fed into a capture card on the XP PC and a touch screen enabled monitor at the bedside allows the end-user to control the camera position via Presents. The recording scenario is as follows: 1. Student enters the lab environment and logs in via LDAP protocol to system 2. Depending on the room and camera number, they only see the video feed from that specific unit. 3. Once successfully logged in, they can choose to position the camera via the present menu and then start recording. 4. The video is recorded locally to the XP PC hard drive and when the user presses the “SAVE” option, it is uploaded via FTP to a server on the local network. 5. A quick “low-quality” preview is generated on the server and a higher quality MPEG2 version is stored in the user’s account. This is accessible via a web-based interface to the Video on Demand (VoD) software. 6. The student logs out and looks at the video clip online for critique and feedback.
