PSF4 Lot 2B- Westmorland and Furness VRS assessments 2024/25

The background to this commission encompasses 2 previous VRS projects and a more recent request to Area Network teams to identify potential sites for VRS installation which are detailed below, • A comprehensive survey of VRS infrastructure in Cumbria was undertaken by Atkins in 2013. The objective of this survey was to review the condition of the VRS in the county and provide a condition report with recommendations for upgrading or removal. Based on the results of this survey, Cumbria County Council implemented an extensive program of works to address the recommended actions. Following a recent review of the Atkins Report, it has become apparent that there were a number of sites which we not included in the 2013 survey. • Local Highway Network teams were asked to identify sites which they felt may warrant, subject to assessment, the installation of VRS. • In 2018, Safer Road Fund monies were identified for the A592 principal road, as part of the Dft research, as requiring improvements to make the road safer, which included the installation of VRS. The origins of proposed VRS came firstly from suggestions made by the Road Assessment Foundation in their conclusions from applying the international Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). These locations were reviewed by Capita and a proportion of the proposed VRS has been installed. Currently there are 13 VRS sites outstanding from the initial proposal which require re assessment. Twelve of the sites already have a VRS design, however, due to the lack of available funding the authority has decided to reassess all thirteen sites to produce a prioritised list. Keywords: VRS
