Tender description

The Forth Road Bridge (FRB) is a long span suspension bridge which carries the A9000 over the Firth of Forth. It was opened in 1964 and is a Category A listed structure. The bridge consists of two approach viaducts and a suspension bridge which forms the main section of the structure. The footpaths are 4.65m wide and span the entire length of the bridge parallel to the carriageway. The eleven-span south viaduct is 438 metres long and is discontinuous at Pier S3. The six-span north viaduct is a continuous structure 253 metres long. On the south viaduct, the viaduct is divided into two continuous structures. The spans of the viaducts vary from 34 metres to 54 metres, and the heights of the piers above base vary from 13 metres to 37 metres. The deck at the viaducts is made up of a 101.6mm thick reinforced concrete slab overlaid with 6.35mm thick rubberised bitumen with granite chippings. The deck is supported by steel cantilever beams. The scheme will include surfacing removal, concrete testing and repair, VRS removal and refurbishment, and resurfacing. BEAR Scotland are looking to appoint a contractor to carry out this work. Concrete repairs to the underside of the deck will be accessible from the viaduct gantries. These works will be undertaken along ~250m of one footway on the FRB viaduct footway. The Contractor must have demonstrable experience of similar works. The Contractor must also be approved to the applicable sector schemes for these kinds of works.
