Design Improvements for Durable Timber Frame Constructions

The aim of this work is to assess the design durability of timber frame wall systems used in Ireland across different building typologies including houses and apartments. The study will examine and compare timber frame wall systems commonly used in Ireland and in the main countries in Europe where timber frame walls are used. Recommendations shall be made on innovation and design improvements to ensure and control durability. Outputs and information from this study should be disseminated to relevant stakeholders. A desk study will examine the hygrothermal performance of timber frame wall systems in Ireland, comparing with international practices with similar climatic conditions. Innovations and, where appropriate, design recommendations to improve durability, shall be given in the study outputs. A hygrothermal assessment under different timber frame design scenarios within Irish weather conditions will be conducted. Based on the results of the study, a number of suitable timber frame buildings may be required for experimental testing focusing on the external walls. The study will include a strategy to share the results with the relevant stakeholders.
