Irish Rail is required under the REACH Regulations to track and retain copies of Safety Datasheets (SDS) for chemicals that are stored on the company’s property, and ensure this documentation is available to all staff. The largest users of chemicals in the company are the Chief Mechanical Engineering Department (CME) which maintains the trains and the Chief Civil Engineering Department (CCE) which maintains the track. At this point in time, Irish Rail handles over 1,500 chemicals and requires an online tracking system that will assist with the sourcing and annual updating of SDS.
