Wigan Civic Centre - Concrete Investigation

Tender description

Wigan Civic Centre is a brutalist building constructed in 1970. It was originally developed to provide council offices but was closed in 2018 following the refurbishment of the town hall. The building is four storeys and has an L shaped footprint. Capital&Centric have been appointed to deliver the refurbishment of the building on behalf of Wigan Council. Civic Engineers have undertaken an initial condition survey, identifying instances of water ingress and damp penetration. They noted that concrete carbonation had commenced and, in some instances, had advanced to such an extent that reinforcement had severely corroded causing caracking and spalling to the internal face of concrete columns. Following this, they have provided a scope of works for further testing and investigation. The Council requires concrete investigation in accordance with the scoping document provided by Civic Engineers. This includes, but is not limited to, assessment of: • Carbonation depth • Cement content • Chloride testing • Visual inspection and hammer testing Keywords: Restoration
