Tourism is a key part of the economy in Newry, Mourne and Down. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council ('The Council') has identified tourism growth as a key priority in the Corporate Plan. The Council provide a wide range of facilities, attractions and events which engage local citizens and visitors. The destination's strength lies in our three areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONB); Mourne AONB, Strangford Lough and Lecale AONB and Ring of Gullion AONB, and in our bustling economic hubs and rural escapes that are steeped in history, culture and heritage. The region is now operating as an UNESCO Global Geopark having achieved UNESCO Global Geopark in May 2023 and is recognised as a place of unique landscape and cultural heritage.
