Provision of a 5-Year Strategy for the National Database of Sport & Recreation Amenities

Sport Ireland is the authority tasked with the development of Sport in Ireland. This includes participation in Sport, high performance Sport, anti-doping, coaching and the development of the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus. Sport Ireland’s remit of work is guided by the National Sports Policy (2018-2027), Sport Ireland’s Statement of Strategy and the National Physical Activity Plan. BACKGROUND - NATIONAL DATABASE OF SPORT & RECREATION AMENITIES Project History Sport Ireland commissioned a Feasibility Study into the potential of developing a National Base Registry (Database) of Sports & Recreation Amenities in Ireland. The study was funded by Healthy Ireland, carried out by ESRI Ireland, and was completed in July 2019. The study’s report is highly positive about the feasibility of the database and finds that it has the potential to facilitate and transform how recreational amenities are planned, used and managed in Ireland, as well as how the public search and interact with them. The Feasibility Study report recmended: 1. A Pilot Phase to build the system’s frameworks to demonstrate its capabilities, as well as refining data management and other processes. 2. Phased implementation over 3 years, beginning with more readily available data. 3. Commitment, possibly mandated, from agencies with data on sports amenities to provide and update the information regularly to agreed standards.
