TWI is looking to invest in a twin-screw extruder machine as part of a suite of material processing machines to be situated in Middlesbrough.A twin-screw extruder is used for many applications such as compounding (ingredient mixing), dispersing of pigments and additives, reinforcement with glass, carbon and other fibre materials, masterbatch production, devolatilization, pumping thermally sensitive materials, and reaction chambers for mixing and transport of viscous materials. The project will upgrade the current research facilities on the site as well as providing a new research and innovation facility. The centre will focus on new materials testing facilities, especially non-destructive testing technologies, and support local economic development.
