GMCA643 Support service for Girls &Young women who are at risk of gang related youth violence, sexual exploitation and abuse and modern-day slavery

<p>Girls &amp; young women make up a small proportion of the overall Greater Manchester Cohort which can often mean that the ‘system’ of criminal justice and prevention is aimed at primarily male needs and can exclude suitable interventions and expertise for girls and young women. A range of research has evidenced that responses to women in the CJS insufficiently account for the specific areas of need and pathways into support. The Corston report, commissioned in 2006 highlighted the specific challenges and lessons specific to women, stating that there is a clear need for” a distinct radically different, visibly led, strategic, proportionate, holistic, woman-centred, integrated approach.” The Corston report was aimed at adult women in the justice system but recognises the differentiation required to respond meaningfully, along with the systemic disadvantage being created by the current system. In the 15-year review, published in 2021, much work remained with many of the key recommendations still not achieved.</p> <p>Earlier this year the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit (GMVRU) received confirmation of multi-year Home Office Serious Violence funding. The Violence Reduction Governance Board has subsequently agreed to invest £88,000 of this funding to commission a provider to develop and deliver a mentoring service for girls and young women, aged 14-21, who are at risk of serious gang related youth violence, criminal, and sexual exploitation and abuse, and modern slavery, from contract award until 31st March 2024, It is expected that the successful provider will develop and deliver a programme of support for girls and young women that will encompass:</p> <p> • Interventions that are trauma responsive and address the complex needs of girls and young Women who are at risk of serious gang related youth violence, sexual exploitation and abuse, and modern slavery.</p> <p>• A suite of activities to support these vulnerabilities, through one-to-one mentoring and group activities.</p> <p>• Links in with local statutory services and local community providers, with a focus on relationships, sport/cultural and positive activities</p> Keywords: Getting out, Girls, Modern slavery, gang related, Young women, Women
