Referral Management Service Brighton

NHS Brighton and Hove has had a Referral Management Service (RMS) in place since May 2008. In November 2011 the PCT consulted with primary care practices on the cost effectiveness of the service and which elements of the service should be continued. The output from the consultation has led to the need to develop this service specification. The service will receive all referrals from General Practitioners within NHS Brighton and Hove / Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group. Aims and objectives of service • To support the healthcare system in Brighton and Hove in following the principle of the patient seeing the right clinician in the right place at the right time • To reduce workload for staff in primary care • To efficiently direct referrals from primary care clinicians to the most appropriate service • To check that referrals meet clinical criteria before processing them and take action when they do not • To support primary care in maintaining and optimising the care of patients in primary care • To offer patients choice of provider for referrals to consultant led secondary care services and book their appointments • To manage the Brighton and Hove Prior Approval Process • To reduce the number of referrals from primary care to other services • To deliver a cost effective service Capacity of the service Estimated activity is approximately 50,000 referrals per year. This includes referrals that require clinical triage and those that do not.
