PSNI - Cycle to Work Scheme

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is one of the largest employers in Northern Ireland with a workforce of approximately 7,150 full-time police officers and 2,500 police support staff. The Service is responsible for policing a geographic area of some 14,139 km2 (or 5,459 square miles) with a population of approximately 1.7m people. The PSNI Cycle To Work Scheme has been in operation since 2009 and has issued over 2300 bikes to employees. Under this government scheme, PSNI purchases a bicycle and safety equipment up to the value of £2000 on behalf of the employee and receives the amount back again through a salary sacrifice system. It is not permitted for the employee to exceed the £2000 limit by adding their own money to the transaction, or by offering any other cycling equipment as part exchange. The purpose of the service is to enable staff to hire bicycles – with the option to buy – and safety equipment for journeys made between home and the workplace or for part of these journeys, free of tax, National Insurance and where possible VAT as defined by the Department for Transport (DFT) Cycle to Work Schemes. The PSNI wishes to continue operating the scheme and requires one supplier who will supply and undertake to properly fit the bicycles and safety equipment. This PSNI Cycle To Work Scheme is open to all PSNI employees directly employed by the Chief Constable, except Police Officer Part Time. It is not open to friends or family or serving PSNI employees.
