NIEA - Greys Point Fort Conservation Management Plan

The contract is for the provision of a Conservation Management Plan for Grey Point Fort, Co. Down. Grey Point Fort is a historic monument in State Care, managed by the Department of the Environment (DoE). This is a unique surviving coastal defence site in Northern Ireland. Presently the site is open and presented to the public. The Department is fully committed to the conservation and management of the site and increased enhancement of visitor understanding and appreciation. The overall aim of the Department is to maximise the potential of the site as a major heritage asset for Northern Ireland, while retaining the physical and historic integrity of the site and providing a safe, unique and authentic experience for visitors and regular users. The Department requires a Conservation Management Plan to provide the framework for further developing the site with this aim – in terms of addressing the conservation needs of the physical fabric, refurbishment and development of interpretative material and presentation to, and visitor use of, the site. There are a number of stakeholder groups that are actively involved with the site. They must be consulted and their views incorporated into the overall plan. A methodology for stakeholder engagement must be provided to NIEA by the service provider for approval. The appointed service provider must have demonstrable experience in successfully delivering Conservation Management Plans for defence heritage/ historic military sites of 18th-20th century date, of a similar size or complexity to Grey Point Fort. The successful service provider will use this experience and expertise to produce a Conservation Management Plan for Grey Point Fort that will be in accordance with best practice standards, taking into account the specifics of a defence heritage/ historic military site.
