The City of London Corporation (“Authority”) invites Tenders for the provision of waste management, cleansing, recycling and disposal of waste from the New Spitalfields Market site, Leyton. New Spitalfields Market is the UK's premier Horticultural Wholesale Market, owned and administered by the City of London Corporation. It has some 140 tenants across a footprint of some 32 acres. The market attracts approximately 1 million vehicles per year and has a turnover of some 750,000 tonnes per annum of fruit, vegetables and flowers. The Contract relates to the full management of waste and market cleaning on site. This encompasses waste collection, management, cleansing of common areas, and the recycling and disposal of, on average, 12,500-13,500 tonnes of mixed associated market waste per year, i.e. organic, cardboard, timber, plastic, polystyrene. There will be an emphasis on continual improvement regarding recycling and sustainability. There is an expectation that 95% of waste will be recycled, and 0% of waste will be sent to landfill. Cost reduction innovations will also be expected. The Market operates for trading 6 days per week, however, due to the nature of the business, contracting staff are employed 24/6 in order to ensure that cleaning and waste management are proactively managed. Within the Contract, key areas will cover the cleaning of common areas within the main 309,000 sq ft wholesale pavilion, roadways and external distribution areas connected to the 40,000 sq ft catering supply buildings area, and some 1 million sq ft of parking areas and roadways, all of which are required to meet the exacting standards of Food Hygiene Regulations and Health and Safety. The duration of the Contract is five [5] years, subject to the right of the Authority (at its sole discretion) to exercise its right to extend the Contract by up to two [2] years. The maximum length of the Contract is therefore seven [7] years.
