Kilkeel Harbour Pile Repairs

Kilkeel Harbour is located 50 miles south east of Belfast on the south-eastern coast of Northern Ireland. The operator of the harbour the Northern Ireland Fishery Harbour Authority (NIFHA) has initiated a project funded under the European Fisheries Fund for the repair and refurbishment of important sections of infrastructure at the harbour entrance and inner harbour. This location is a busy fishing harbour that will remain operational throughout the Contract. The works are confined to the following three areas. River Training Piles Repairs shall be carried out to the river training piles located to the western end of the Inner basin where the Kilkeel River enters the harbour. The proposed repairs shall consist of plate repairs to holes as instructed by the Project Manager. Concrete and steel repairs are also required to the downstream sections of the walls. Meeney’s Pier Cathodic Protection shall be carried out to the sheet piles located to the end of Meeney’s Pier (the northern pier at the mouth of the Harbour). Also some concrete repairs to the main concrete structures. South Pier The foundation retaining piles underpinning Caison units forming the pier tip of the south pier have deteriorated. It is proposed to provide new facing piles to these piles with a concrete backfill. Depending on the extent of the sheet piling provided, some plate repairs and cathodic protection may also be required in this area. It is hoped that works will commence on 2 February 2015.
