DSD - Lagan Weir Replacement Footbridge

Tender description

This project is a develop and build scheme for a new cycle/pedestrian footbridge at the Lagan Weir spanning the River Lagan from Donegal Quay on the north to Queens Quay on the south. The new footbridge will be approximately 120m in length, between abutments with additional ramp lengths of approximately 27m and 29m, with a deck width varying from 4.20m to 10.0m at its widest. The vertical profile will be a continuous curved profile with ramps at a gradient of 1:20, the horizontal alignment will also be curved with a degree of a-symmetry. The new footbridge will be of structural steel, enveloped in aluminium cladding and will have a glass parapet on the east elevation and a stainless steel post and rail system on the west parapet. The surfacing will be of thin granite flags glued to a waterproofed steel deck. Lighting will be a prominent feature on the new footbridge with discrete lighting set into parapet posts and hand railing with approach lights set into the walkway surfacing, as well as river navigation lights. A pair of thermal imagery cameras will cover the deck and adjacent river area and will track the location of any person that may fall from the bridge. In addition emergency call points will be provided linked direct to the local PSNI station. New structural steel supports will be constructed off the existing piers which will require some modifications to the piers with the removal of reinforced concrete parapets and slabs and the remaining sections made good. The spans across the river have been fully designed and all visible aspects of the bridge have been detailed and specified. The successful contractor will be responsible for the design of the support structures on both the Donegal Quay and Queens Quay to support the approach ramps within specified settlement and deflection criteria whilst accommodating the finishes, lighting and drainage as detailed.
