Tender description
The Department for Social Development has statutory responsibility in Northern Ireland for Urban Regeneration. The Department’s Belfast Regeneration Office plays a key role in driving forward the regeneration and development in a comprehensive and integrated way. Belfast Regeneration Office assumes urban regeneration responsibility for most of the city of Belfast (excluding the City Centre). Environmental Improvement Schemes are being used to enhance the visual and physical character of urban areas and to regenerate them through restoring confidence and attracting new investment. Belfast Regeneration Office has identified the Albertbridge Road and Templemore Avenue areas within East Belfast as meeting these criteria and now proposes to implement an Environmental Improvement Scheme within the areas. The proposed scheme is likely to include (but not necessarily be limited to); •the resurfacing of footpaths using natural sandstone paving with granite kerbs •Scarify and new wearing course to road in Templemore Avenue •semi-mature tree and shrub planting •improvements to the streetscape •street lighting A full design for the scheme is currently being completed and planning approvals will be in place along with a Licence with Roads Service for the scheme works. The proposed Environmental Improvement Scheme encompasses the following areas; •Albertbridge Road from junction with Mountpottinger Road to junction with Newtownards Road •Templemore Avenue from junction with Castlereagh Street to junction with Albertbridge Road •Templemore Avenue from junction with Albertbridge Road to junction with Newtownards Road The cost of this proposed public realm scheme will be met from Department for Social Development Belfast Regeneration Office Physical Development Branch’s Public Realm budget of programme monies. Funding for these public realm schemes has been obtained for delivery within 2012/13 business year.
