Professional Services Unit (PSU) provides a statistics, economic and research function to the Department for Communities (DfC). This work informs policy, planning and decision making in the areas of social security, child maintenance and pensions, as well as housing, urban regeneration, culture, arts and sport, community development and voluntary activity. PSU operates in an environment where timeliness, ease of access and accuracy of information are all key aspects of an effective information delivery process. The unit receives periodic data feeds from the UK Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). These data feeds are scans from the various benefit management systems as well as other administrative and survey databases. Many of these scans are processed and analysed using SAS software. SAS is a statistical software that has historically been used by PSU. SAS is required to deliver the PSU work programme to produce Official Statistics and provide analytical support for teams within DfC whose work feeds into the DfC Strategy ‘Building Inclusive Communities 2020-2025’.
