CONSERVATION OF ST OWENS CHURCH

St Owen’s church is a ruined hall-and-tower church, built in 1827, typical of the type financed through Board of First Fruits of the Church of Ireland in the early decades of the 19th century. The present structure replaced a medieval church, dedicated to St Mary, which was demolished to make way for it from 1824 to 1826. The site is part of a wider archaeological landscape which contains a number of other Recorded Monuments, including a bastioned 17th century fort, battle site, roadway and house to the northeast, two Williamite military camp sites to the west, and a medieval borough, tower house, monastery and hospital in the village of Ballymore to the southeast.
