Direct payments allow service users to arrange and purchase their own care and support which meets the person’s assessed and eligible needs and outcomes, either from independent providers or by employing their own Personal Assistants to deliver this. A service provider will manage this for the Authority. Direct Payments (DP), (also known as Self-Directed Support (SDS), Option 1 since April 2014) were first introduced in 1996. Direct payments allow service users to arrange and purchase their own care and support which meets the person’s assessed and eligible needs and outcomes, either from independent providers or by employing their own Personal Assistants (PAs) to deliver this. A service provider is required to facilitate this for the Authority in accordance with the Service Specification.
