PEATLAND RESTORATION & RE-WETTING WORKS (DRAIN BLOCKING & EDGE REPROFILING) AT DARNRIG MOSS SSSI

Peatland restoration at Darnrig moss SSSI, Involving bunding, edge reprofiling, peat dams and repairing existing plastic dams Buglife Scotland is managing this project to restore degraded lowland raised bog habitat at Darnrig Moss, near Falkirk, Stirlingshire on behalf of NatureScot and the landowners. This sites is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This designation is due to the raised bog habitat and associated species communities on the site. The wider area comprises a mix of raised bog, blanket peat bog and intermediate peatland that provide a highly important habitat in the region, supporting a number of rare plant and animal species. Fundamental to enhancement of the site is restoration of the natural hydrology, which has been disturbed by man-made drainage channels. The work proposed in this contract aims to re-wet the site by damming these drains, retaining water on the site and raising the water table resulting in long term improvement to the raised bog habitat. We will be awarding a contract for installation of peat dams on drainage ditches, creation of water-retaining bunds, dam repair and edge reprofiling at Darnrig Moss SSSI, Falkirk.
