Replacement of Windows to Wards A&B and Paediatric Ward at Mayo University Hospital

Tender description

The proposed works includes the replacement of the existing windows in a four storey / part five storey building to include, Ward B at First Floor Level, Ward A at Second floor Level and Paediatric Ward at Third Floor level. There are circa 160 windows in total of varying sizes. The patients in Wards A & B will be decanted on a phased basis to facilitate the works while the Paediatric Ward will be fully operational during the works. Due to bed pressure in the hospital, individual rooms within the Paediatric Ward will be made available, one room at a time to carry out the works. The contractor’s access to the elevations of the building is severely restricted and will require extensive scaffolding to gain access to the enclosed courtyards on the south side of the building. Temporary scaffold access platforms will be required over the two storey Hospital Street to access the South side of the building. Ground levels vary on the North side of the building where part of the elevation is accessible only from Lower Ground Floor Level via external steps. There are a number of single storey structures projecting from the North and South elevations which restrict access and complicate the design of the scaffolding. Tenderers shall visit the site to assess the access restrictions that exist prior to submitting their tenders. Initially, the successful tenderer for the windows contract will be appointed as Works Contractor who will have full responsibility for preliminaries, scaffolding and Health & Safety for the works. The windows contractor will be responsible for providing the necessary scaffolding to access and measure the window openings and will commence fabrication of the windows prior to the Main Works Contractors' appointment. Measurement of the windows will only be permitted from outside the building to minimise disruption to the patients and Hospital operations.
