There are specific challenges around employment and the local economy. Productivity is 7.4% lower than the UK average, 1 in 4 workers earn below the real living wage, 24.7% of working age adults are economically inactive, and 15% of full time workers earn less than the Luton Living Wage, although the Council honours a living wage level of pay. Commuters in Luton are more likely to earn higher salaries than Luton residents. There are 7,000 jobless households in Luton and median house prices are 9.57 times gross annual earnings. The health of the population in Luton is poorer than the England average; with life expectancy at birth for males 78.4 years and 82.1 years, females. A large gap is also present between those living in the most and least deprived areas (5.1 years male, 6.9 years females). The Population Wellbeing Strategy for Luton 2020-2021 sets out to: • Improve life expectancy, healthy life expectancy and reduce the gap in life expectancy • Increase physical activity, good nutrition and healthy weight among adults • Improve health & wellbeing for people with mental health conditions • Keeping adults safe and encouraging positive relationships, with a focus on reducing domestic abuse • Meet the needs of carers • Decrease drug and alcohol related harm in adults • Increase social connectedness • Improving physical and mental health in older people • Decrease drug related harm in young people • Keeping children and young people safe, with a focus on reducing serious youth violence, exploitation and neglect • Create healthy housing and reduce homelessness • Reduce smoking prevalence
