Tender description
The Cornwall Marine Hydrogen Centre (CMHC) will offer independent expertise and testing facilities for hydrogen fuel cell electric propulsion systems for marine vessels. It will specialise in equipment and systems for leisure and commercial vessels up to 18m in length. This market, which is estimated to be over 30 million vessels worldwide, is currently powered mostly by diesel, and will need to be replaced by clean propulsion systems to meet Net Zero goals. Part-funded by an ERDF research grant, the CMHC will be based at the University of Exeter’s Renewable Energy faculty in Cornwall. Individual components or whole hydrogen propulsion systems will be tested and monitored in a purpose-built facility, providing technology providers with independent validation and accelerated product development. The delivery partners provide a unique blend of world-class Renewable Energy and Marine Engineering expertise. Pure Energy Professionals (PEP) has a 30-year track record of working with manufacturers and investors in renewable energy and has been at the forefront of new technology adoption. The University of Exeter is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities, and is in the top ten for renewable energy. The current focus of the CMHC is to build the test rig, with a demonstration hydrogen electric propulsion system, using commercially available components. The Electrical components are the items to be procured in this tender. The purchase, build and commissioning of the test rig and demonstration system must be completed by the end of 2022. Lot 50341: Lot 1 - Battery DC-DC Converter A battery DC/DC converter is required to charge the battery array when the motor energy consumption is less than the energy generated by the fuel cell, equally, the converter will discharge the battery when the power demand from the motor is greater than power generated by the fuel cell, the discharging process is anticipated at system start up and during peak power demand. Lot 50342: Lot 2 - DC-AC Motor controller A DC/AC converter is required to drive the AC motor detailed in 2.3. The motor controller will take power from the DC bus operating between 370 and 432 Volts and power an AC motor. The controller will be able to deliver a continuous power output of 30kW but will be used to demonstrate brief periods of operation at higher power levels. It would be preferable to order both the motor and controller together to ensure compatibility. Lot 50343: Lot 3 - AC Motor An AC motor will be used to demonstrate the power output from the fuel cell and battery array. The motor will be able to deliver a continuous power output of 40kW but will be used to demonstrate brief periods of operation at higher power levels. Suppliers are encouraged to provide the motor and its controller i.e., Lot 2 and 3 in one package to ensure compatibility Lot 50344: Lot 4 - DC-DC Motor controller The motor controller will take power from the DC bus operating between 370 and 432 Volts and power an DC motor. The controller will be able to deliver a continuous power output of 30kW but will be used to demonstrate brief periods of operation at higher power levels. It would be preferable to order both the motor and controller together to ensure compatibility. Lot 50345: Lot 5 - DC Motor A DC motor will be used to demonstrate the power output from the fuel cell and battery array similarly to the AC Motor in Lot 3. The DC motor will smaller in capacity than the AC option, it must be able to deliver a continuous power output of 15kW but will be used to demonstrate brief periods of operation at higher power levels. Suppliers are encouraged to provide the motor and its controller i.e., Lot 4 and 5 in one package to ensure compatibility.
