The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has responsibility to protect life, preserve order, prevent crime and secure justice as set out in Section 31 of the Police Northern Ireland Act 2000. When a crime occurs the scene is examined and assessed by the PSNI for any forensic evidence that could help with the investigation of the offence that has occurred. This evidence can include fingerprints, footwear impressions, fibres, DNA, gun residue and bodily fluids. To ensure that a thorough examination of the crime scene occurs the Crime Scene Investigator needs to be equipped with high quality, reliable equipment part of which includes a forensic light source kit to facilitate the searching of trace evidence that is often invisible to the naked eye. The forensic light source kits currently used by the PSNI to examine crime scenes are coming to end of life and need replaced. The objective of this process is to replace the light sources currently in use with new forensic light source kits that meet the specified criteria to ensure a thorough crime scene examination.
