The PSNI Mapping Section, located in Carrickfergus, survey scenes of serious crime and serious road traffic collisions. With staff strength of 10, the unit is responsible for the supply of cartography to investigation teams, to the courts, to police and related agencies. The products provided by the unit range from bespoke large-scale mapping of scenes; to Ordnance Survey originated small scale plans; they also provide surveys of building interiors. Finished products can be digital or hard copy, 2D or 3 Dimensional. Mapping Section currently use an AutoCAD Suite of products to prepare the finished maps and plans. Completed works can be presented in a number of ways both digitally and on hard copy. The Section currently survey with a number of differing instruments and techniques. It is the aim of this document to detail the requirements in relation to acquiring two 3D Laser Scanners and associated Software. Essential to the discharge of unit responsibility is the collection and collation of accurate survey data and the translation of that data into working drawings. The requirement is for two replacement survey instruments that will reflect new developments in technical specification presently available, and the present and future needs of the section.
