The introduction of parking schemes contributes towards the Council’s overall Traffic Management objectives. The Council has a number parking schemes located across the town to ensure the free flow of traffic and manage its kerbside space. As part of these schemes, parking provision is provided in a number of ways including the use of pay & display machines which allows service users to pay for their parking using coins and or a cashless parking option for payment. A significant number of drivers, especially those parking for short periods continue to opt to use cash to pay for parking. In order to ensure the machines continue to work, the parking technicians within the enforcement team monitor the levels of cash contained inside the machines using back office monitoring technology and then ensure that bulk coin is collected before the machine becomes too full and goes out of service. It is essential that the machines are kept in working order to ensure end user satisfaction with the Councils parking provision and that the coin is collected on a regular basis so that cash levels are kept low and therefore reduce the opportunity for theft from the machines.
